Volunteering in Vanuatu

Dr Susan Clift and Hygienist/Therapist Michelle Hogg have been selected to attend a volunteer dentistry project in Vanuata sponsored by Rotary.

Rotary has set up an ongoing professional and free dental service for disadvantaged Ni-Van people in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu is an independent nation reported to have 89% unemployment and has a high dental caries rate (WHO = 4.4% vs Australia 1.1 & Tonga 2.1). There are 83 islands and 123 different languages in Vanuatu and proper dental facilities and dentists are only available on 2 of these islands.

Only a small fraction of Ni-Vanuatu people have access to any professional dental care and the cost of private dentistry is prohibitive for the vast majority of native islanders. Currently treatment outside Port Vila, the capital, is usually provided by non-dentally trained heath workers with questionable equipment and sterilisation facilities.

Congratulations on this wonderful opportunity.

Safe travels!

Staff Changes

We have new faces at Clare Dental this year. Dr Susan Clift joins us and has already embraced the local community through Rotary and Netball with BSR.

Mikaela Aldenhoven returns as an Oral Health Therapist completing her Bachelor of Oral Health as Dux of the course. Congratulations Mikaela.
